Q: How do I reduce the risk of collecting invalid and inconsistent measurement data?
The objectives of your measurement program cannot be accomplished without good data. Establishing a good data collection plan is, therefore, a cornerstone of any successful metrics program. A number of things can be done to ensure that the measurement right data is collected accurately at the right time, including the establishment of a centralized measurement plan with clearly defined metrics and a well-trained team. For the greatest benefit, though, as much of the data gathering process as possible should be automated.

At minimum, standardized forms or spreadsheets should be used for data collection and metrics calculation. But at some point data will need to be input into a metrics database if it is to contribute to performance improvements and have any long-term usefulness. And each time the data is "touched" is another opportunity to introduce human error into the metrics values. Using spreadsheets speeds the process of metrics calculation, but is complex and cumbersome to manage and maintain over the long haul, and usually requires manual compiling and distribution of reports.

Automating metrics reporting and delivery, using software intended for the purpose, eliminates hours spent babysitting the measurement process. It also increases usability because the metrics are available on the computer instead of buried in a file drawer. Remember, metrics are an investment. Automation reduces the expense, and the risk.
